Plastering where the substrate and build-up decide the result

We handle plastering, replastering, plaster repairs, facade plastering and basement plaster in Gothenburg and Northern Halland. That includes detached plaster, cracking, incompatible old repairs, façades that need rebuilding and basement walls where the wrong materials have made moisture issues worse.

Plaster is not just a finish layer. The substrate, the mortar, the preparation and the way the wall deals with moisture and movement all have to work together.

Facade plaster: when repair is enough and when replastering is needed

A cracked or detached façade does not automatically mean everything must come off. Sometimes local repair is enough. Sometimes the plaster system is too weak or too incompatible for patching alone to make sense. We assess the extent of detachment, the substrate, moisture exposure and previous repairs before recommending scope.

Basement plaster and moisture

Historic England notes that old compatible lime plaster often helps a wall dry rather than preventing drying. That matches our practical approach in basements: do not remove working plaster just because it is old, and do not trap moisture with dense incompatible repairs.

We try to understand how the wall dries before recommending removal or replastering.

Lime plaster and compatible systems

Lime plaster is often appropriate in older buildings that need breathability and a more forgiving response to movement. That does not mean lime is always the answer, but the wrong combination of substrate and plaster is a common reason for cracking and delamination.

Plaster on lath and reed mat

Traditional substrates such as lath and reed mat need a different approach than plaster on modern boards or masonry. The build-up must handle movement, achieve bond and still produce a stable long-term surface.

Preparation, mesh and the right build-up

Plastering rarely fails because the final coat looked wrong. It fails because the substrate was prepared badly, transitions were ignored, mesh was missing where required or the system was wrong for the wall. We put a lot of focus on preparation, anchorage, mesh, primers and how the coats should work together.

Detached plaster, hollow plaster and repair strategy

When plaster sounds hollow on tapping, it usually means bond has been lost. That does not always mean the whole wall must come down, but it does mean a cosmetic patch is rarely enough. We assess whether local repair, partial removal or a more thorough replastering approach is the sensible route.

Our process

  1. Review of substrate, moisture, cracks, detachment and previous materials.
  2. Assessment of whether the job is local repair, replastering or a larger system issue.
  3. Selection of mortar and build-up based on what the wall actually needs.
  4. Execution with attention to preparation, coats and detailing.
  5. Ongoing alignment so you understand the reasoning.

Plastering FAQs

Why does plaster detach or sound hollow?

Common causes are moisture, movement, incompatible materials or poor preparation.

When plaster sounds hollow, bond has often been lost and the cause needs to be understood before repair.

Does all old plaster need to be removed?

No. If existing plaster is still sound and compatible with the wall, keeping working areas can be better than stripping everything back.

Lime plaster or cement-based mortar – which is right?

Lime plaster is often right in older buildings that need breathability and movement tolerance. In other constructions, a different system may be more appropriate.

Is plaster suitable for basements?

Yes, but only if the mortar and build-up suit the wall and its moisture behaviour. Dense incompatible systems can make the problem worse.

Can you plaster on lath and reed mat?

Yes. Traditional substrates such as lath and reed mat require the right build-up and compatible materials for bond and movement handling.

What causes cracks in plaster?

Cracks can come from movement, shrinkage, moisture or frost, incompatible materials or poor preparation and detailing.

Do you take smaller plaster repairs?

Yes. Small repairs can be the right solution when the problem is local, but they still need compatible materials and correct execution to last.

What happens during a free site visit?

We review surfaces, substrate, signs of moisture, cracking or detachment and talk through the project goal before recommending method and materials.

What should I send you first?

Please send front-facing photos, close-ups of cracks or detached areas, approximate dimensions and any information about previous plaster or repairs.
